| 内容記述 | This chapter will provide a historical overview of foreign language policies in Japan with a special focus on English. Since the opening of Japan at the start of the Meiji period, there has been a constant swing between opposing camps: those who espouse communication and intercultural development and those who fear that bilingualism brings with it a loss of identity and threat to culture. The beliefs promulgated by these factions continue to influence the shifts in reforms, policy and practice to the detriment of the quality of language education in Japan. | |||||||
